Background: Developing interventions that incorporate the lived experiences of patients with depression is essential for effectively reducing depressive symptoms. Although numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) in alleviating depressive symptoms, to date, the effectiveness of an IPT protocol specifically redesigned based on the phenomenological components of Iranian patients with depression has not been empirically evaluated.
Aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of an adapted interpersonal psychotherapy protocol based on phenomenological components of Iranian depressed patients on Improving symptoms of depression.
Methods: The method of this study was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group and a three-month follow-up. The statistical population of the study included all patients with depressive disorder in Tehran province during the period 2022-2023, among these individuals, 30 people (15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group) were purposefully selected and then randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. The data collection tools in this study were the Structured Clinical Interview for Disorders based on DSM-5-TR (American Psychiatric Association, 2022) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (Beck et al., 1996). Also, to analyze the research data, the mixed ANOVA method was used using SPSS-27 software at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The results showed that the adapted interpersonal therapy protocol based on the an adapted interpersonal psychotherapy protocol based on phenomenological components of Iranian is efficacy in reducing symptoms of depression in people with depressive disorder (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Given the confirmation of the efficacy of the interpersonal therapy protocol that has been redesigned based on the phenomenological components of Iranian society depressed patients on improving depressive symptoms in this study, it is suggested that the aforementioned protocol be used in counseling centers for the treatment of depression along with other psychological therapies so that in addition to focusing on cognitive and mental processes with the help of techniques adapted to the phenomenological components used in this therapy, the individual can benefit from more favorable affective and social relationships.
